Set in a typical Brimingham red brick building, with bright neon lights shining from unmissable signs the warm welcome begins on the street, pulling you in to an attractive interior stretching across two huge floors and decorated in typical Chinese restaurant style – plenty of red and black and a good dose of lively conversation to lighten the mood. Chung Ying Garden
Birmingham enjoys a plethora of good Cantonese restaurants and Chung Ying Garden is one of the most established and the best. An old-style Chinese eaterie decorated in reds with wood detailing and statues of proprietary Gods, it attracts a Western crowd during the week, especially local business folk, but on Sunday the place is packed with Chinese diners enjoying the dim sum. What's cooking? The menu is gigantic, with nearly 380 dishes, including boiled rice, so if you ever had a favourite, it is here, as are some less familiar dishes. Or, if you can't face the decisions, try one of the six set menus. Good vegetarian selection and noodle dishes, and great dim sum.

City Café
When the smart, sleek City Café went up in Birmingham a while back, hopes were high for a new destination to meet, dine, and hang out, City Café has surpassed them all. The very smart and light dining room, with its sleek lines and modern decor, is a terrific spot, as is the terrace outside on the piazza. The cuisine could be termed modern international. Try starter of seared Jamaican jerk hake with fried plantain and coconut sauce, main course of confit of rare breed Duroc pork with Cox's apple and thyme crust, grain mustard and mash, and pudding of Irish coffee mousse with mini doughnuts. See what we mean? The staff and wines are top-notch also.

Filini Restaurant
Reached by an open staircase from reception, Filini is the chic, spacious, softly-lit restaurant of Birmingham’s eye-catching Radisson Blu Hotel. At one end are an open kitchen and a wood-fired pizza oven. Throughout are walnut floors, mirrors and floor-to-ceiling windows encouraging a sense of brightness and space, punctuated by bay and olive trees. The menu is Italian, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and a deliberate avoidance of rich ingredients such as cream, and heavy sauces. Delightful dishes are compactly split into antipasti (including three sharing options), risottos, pastas, pizzas and secondi such as baked sea bass with vernaccia wine and artichoke puree. Staff are courteous and helpful. A popular restaurant that’s often busy.

Henry's Cantonese Restaurant
Just how Henrys came to get its name is a bit mysterious, as it is a topflight, slightly formal Cantonese restaurant. Bright and spacious with a relaxed atmosphere, Henrys is decorated in yellows and reds, with Chinese music playing gently in the background. It is very business-entertainment oriented and attracts a professional crowd. What's cooking? Just about every one of your favourites, from sesame prawn toasts to mixed dim sum to won ton to crispy aromatic duck served with pancakes - and those are just the starters. You probably already know what you like, but we do recommend the steamed seabass or dover sole with ginger and spring onions, and the sizzling grilled sliced fillet steak Cantonese style. Many veggie dishes and five set menus.

Hotel du Vin & Bistro
The Hotel du Vin Bistro in Birmingham gets it right, just like the entire Hotel du Vin chain. The former Birmingham and West Midlands Eye Hospital, an ornate Victorian landmark, has been transformed into a luxurious, witty, supremely relaxing establishment with the Bistro at its heart. The dining room is a romantic, low-lit, elegant space with a playful antique twist. The menu is rooted in classic European cuisine with a contemporary edge, to which head chef Nick Turner adds his own inventive selections each day. Of course the finest, freshest produce is used. And the 500-strong wine list is breathtaking, with an impressive array by the glass.
