The Vaults Bar and Restaurant With the rich surroundings of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter as its backdrop, The Vaults is among the city’s most celebrated restaurants. Set below a Victorian building one might expect gloom, but this restaurant is utterly contemporary, comfortable and light. Panton S chairs and seriously arty photography show an eye for design and style while brick arches furnished with sofas provide cosy spaces for romantic cocktails or swapping gossip. Headed up by Keith Brown, who comes via Bank and The Jam House, the kitchen provides a stunning British and European menu reliant on local, fresh and quality produce and simple, sympathetic and unfussy techniques. An impressive selection of wines and champagnes are the icing on The Vaults’ extremely tempting cake. Cuisine: Modern European Location: Newhall Place, Newhall Hill, Birmingham, B1 3JH [Map] |

Valentinos Restaurant Brummie lovers of Latino food are familiar with the duck-egg-blue walls and potted palms inside Valentino's Restaurant, an Italian dining institution found on Harborne's High Street. This swanky little eatery was the kind of place they invented business lunches and romantic dates for, and the super service, monthly live music nights and superb menu keep the locals coming back for more. We absolutely adore Valentino's rich and hearty menu, and signature dishes include the grilled sardines stuffed with garlic, spinach and pine nuts with a balsamic reduction; the fillet steak served in a mushroom and red wine sauce with a dash of chilli; and the creamy pear and Gorgonzola risotto. Zizzi Italian restaurant chain Zizzi opened the doors of its very first branch in London's Chiswick in 1999. Now there are over 100 branches, all decorated in an appealing contemporary style. Wood-fired ovens, open kitchens and modern interior design with locally influenced art features make for a vibrant atmosphere. As for the food, they serve up a variety of traditional Italian dishes including all the usual suspects: salads, antipasti, pasta, pizza, calzone, risotto as well as fish and meat mains and desserts. What Zizzi really pride themselves on is sourcing good quality ingredients; salads are dressed with white balsamic vinegar from Modena, for example, and offer Goddess Olives, a variety known for their firm flesh and nutty flavour.
