Kinnaree Thai Restaurant
Kinnaree makes the most of its prime spot in Birmingham’s Holiday Wharf building, the long glass, ground floor frontage framing the canalside views rather beautifully. A lot of care has clearly gone into decorating the large, peaceful dining space, at the centre of which is an elegant Thai longboat. All hundred+ ‘home-cooking’-style dishes are served in generous portions on ornate gold-effect bowl by considerate, attractively-dressed Thai staff. Bestsellers include chicken satay, and spare ribs, grilled then steamed until tender.

Pad Thai
OK, so the name's hardly original but there's nothing else quite like Pad Thai in Birmingham. Step downstairs by the Cathay at Holloway Head and you enter a den of unforgettable fun. Here you can eat, drink and sing all in one stylish space, inspired by traditional Thai homes. At 6pm, the doors open and folk from across the West Midlands sit down (typically) for a green curry or pad thai, though there are over 140 dishes. Come 10:30pm, waitresses hand out mics, the big screen flickers into life and Pad Thai transforms into a karaoke lounge where Purple Rain, New York, New York and co. are crooned well into the early hours. Brilliant.

Thai Edge
Perfectly sited in Brindley Place, Thai Edge is a smart, very modern restaurant, with white decor and masses of flowers which are flown in from Thailand, as is much of the decor. You will receive a warm greeting - which is part of what makes this spot a favourite among the mixed, trendy clientele, from students to professionals. Dishes are beautifully served and you'll find all your favourites on the menu, like three types of satay, Thai fish cakes with cucumber salad sauce, spring rolls, spicy minced prawn on toast, and chicken galanga, specialities like steamed sea bass with spicy and sour sauce and tamarind sauce, stir-fried beef, chicken or seafood with fresh chilli, lemon grass, basil and pineapple. Of course, there are pad thai and a plethora of noodle and rice dishes. Four set menus. This is one place you'll return to again and again.

Thai Orchid
Located on Bennett's Hill in Birmingham, the Thai Orchid is wildly popular with local Phad Thai fans. This family-run restaurant chain originated in Thailand and was brought to British shores in 1986 by Vichai Kharmakharm, and today Thai Orchid restaurants can be found all over the country. Designed as relaxing Thai 'oases', each dining room is carefully decorated with hand-carved teak furniture, tropical plants and authentic artefacts, but the main star of the show is the moreish Thai Orchid menu. Filled with traditional favourites, the menu includes signature dishes such as the Tom Yam Gai hot and sour soup with lemon grass, lime leaves and chicken, and the Thai green prawn curry cooked with aubergines and herbs.
